Another Brick in the Wall

All-in-all a good weekend.

Marcos played well. I got some excellent shots (though I haven't sold any), but I still took some good pictures and learned about some improvements I need to make with my camera.

Let's talk about starting a YouTube channel. Triple Oy!

After I realized that I wasn't much of an actor (in my mind, at least), I decided to become a filmmaker. After that, making films consumed me for years, but I didn't do much.

I made a few shorts and shot a feature film. But as I've stated before, I tend to bite off more than I can chew.

The funny thing is we did post these shorts on YouTube, but at the time, my partners and I didn't see YouTube as a source to generate revenue. This was pre-Casey Neistat or other influencers.

When I gave up moviemaking, my sales career took off. But even through all those years, I still had this itch to create visually.

Every piece of equipment I purchased, without the guilt, was to tell stories visually.

My only problem was time and energy. Selling takes time and energy. If nothing else, I tend to throw myself into my work.

Add to that my social media addiction, and well, I had all this equipment that languished.

Well, now I've got time and better handling of the work involved in making videos. What I don't have now is the work. And like I said, banks like it when you pay your mortgage on time.

Oh, and there's this eating and becoming accustomed to a particular lifestyle. Yeah.

So a YouTube channel was always in the cards.

But, I at least need to make it a viable way of generating income. This means I need to get people to watch - me.

So the pitch I've got in my head right now is a middle-aged guy trying to make a go of becoming a full-time creative.

The journey is one thing I'm not seeing when researching starting a photography business.

That's what I think my channel should be about, that journey.

I do have some misgivings. First, is that a compelling enough story to draw in viewers? And second is sustainable.

Plus, I know what I don't want.

I don't want to do gear reviews (I think there are enough of those videos), but something because of what Dan Milner and Eric Kim are doing. A little like Casey Niestat, but not full-on Casey Niestat back in the day of his daily vlogs.

I'm still toying with the idea, but the main thing is I need to start, but I'm not getting any younger.

I've got some ideas of what I have to do this week, but my main goal is to a) keep on applying for jobs and b) start a YouTube Channel and c) find some photography gigs.

I have no idea how often I will post or what my first video will be, but I need to start something.

Either way, this is happening.

My only prayer right now is that this all works.
