Photo Diary: Guy Pulling a Cart

Guy Pulling A Cart. 1/365

Sure, I’d just gotten my M7 back, got a brand spanking new SD card for it, and am now carrying it around everywhere.

Sure, I was able to sneak in a few photos during the day.

But truth be told, I was nervous carrying it around. Nervous about pulling it out of my pocket and snapping a pick. Nervous that whatever photo I took was/is going to suck.

Couple that with this idea of doing a photo challenge of taking a photo a day to improve my photography chops. This itch to master my M7, which would help me master my A7 IV.

I own about six grand in photography equipment and I don’t know how to use it well. That hurts to write, because it’s true. I know it in my gut.

I also know this: I don’t want to take some abstract photo of some building, or plant, or plain o’l building. I know I can do that.

What I can’t do, what cripples the very bejeezus out of me, is photographing people. The thought petrifies me. I always feel like a creeper. Or, I don’t want to use people in that way. The irony is, I don’t want to be a “street photographer” per se, but I work on the street.

I did take a shot of my son earlier, but those stunk. And that was easy, he’s a baby, he trusts me.

I did take a random shot at a community that were visiting and it wasn’t bad. Not great, or good, but at least it had people, but I snuck that shot in.

I knew in my heartiest of hearts, that I didn’t have anything of note. I’d been trying, but nothing.

“What’s the plan for dinner,” I asked Lucy.

“Spaghetti,” she said.

“Okay, I’ll stop at HEB and grab some steaks,” I tell her.

I’m not a big fan of pasta.

As I’m parking, I see this girl walking up to grab a cart, and I see the shot. I like how the sun is beating down on where the carts are, I like she shadow cast by the tree. I like the strong block of blue, the beige, the strip of red.

I miss the girl. But this guy is walking up --

And I pull out my M7. Cars are waiting to see what I’m gonna do, so I gotta be quick, and well, this is shot I got.

I’d wish I’d taken more. I wish I would’ve stood my ground and composed the shot a little bit better. I wish I’d wiped and cleaned my lens as one more step before taking my M7 for a spin.

Alas.

Day One.
