Yesterday started getting an email telling me Marcos was in the starting lineup in his first collegiate game.
The kid played well, scoring his first Try in Rugby. A Try is a Touchdown for us football folks.
Marcos sounded great after the game. It's great to know he's having a good time.
Inspired by his performance, I needed to pick up my camera and shoot something, anything.
So I went to the Multiplex down the street, expecting a girls' soccer tournament.
Now to catch you up, I'm petrified of photographing people I don't know.
It's an irrational fear, I know.
Usually, I photograph Rock Rugby or was invited to shoot an event.
I think all beginning photographers fear photographing strangers. Photography can feel invasive.
If I'm going to make this photography gig work, I will have to get used to photographing strangers.
I didn't find the Soccer tournament, but I found some kind of frisbee tournament called Ultimate.
From what I could gather, Ultimate is like street football, where you try to score in four plays or turnover the ball.
So I took a couple of shots and did manage to get a few bangers.
As I got to one field, this one player made a spectacular flying catch. He trotted to me afterward, asking me if I got the shot.
I did, but it was a bit blurry. There's a setting with my tracking I need to figure out. You live and learn.
My goal is to sell digital downloads.
I use Pass Gallery to share my photos, and they do offer a printing service, but I think most people buy pictures to post on social media.
So I took this opportunity to test my workflow and posted my pictures for sale. We'll see how it works out.
After posting my pics, I started working on a short highlight reel on Marcos' first game.
There came a point while editing I realized I was in the zone. The footage from two of the camera's wasn't great, but it worked for what I was trying to do.
All in all, it was a fantastic Saturday.
I did have a couple of realizations yesterday.
To build this sports photography business, I must be out shooting Thursday through Sunday.
I need to be more familiar with my equipment.
I need to find a way to upload my pics fast for any clients.
I think there's a timeliness to these photos; the quicker I can delvier pictures, the better.
I like the idea of doing lesser-known sports.
I didn't see too many photographers at Ultimate yesterday. I think I saw one guy with a camera with a pro lens on it.
The lesser-known sports could be a good niche to get into.
So yes, yesterday felt better than good; it felt great.
I see the possibilities, but I'm also getting a bead on how much work it'll take to get this thing off the ground.
Now, onto next week.
