Like I Was Saying…
Happy Diwali!
Earlier this evening, Lucy called me up and asked if I wanted to go to the Diwali Festival in downtown Round Rock.
I had no clue what a Diwali was, much less that you need to have a festival for it.
Eh, I was up for a bit of adventure. If nothing else, maybe I could take some cool shots.
I asked Lucy and she said, Diwali was some kind Hindu Festival. It made sense, since are stared seeing women with sarees on.
The festival was kinda of cool. There was big stage for dance troupes to dance to Hindu music. The Hindu men were dressed to nines as well as the Hindu women wearing their colorful sarees.
The whole experience reminded us of our time in India.
I went around taking as many shots that caught my eye and took some video.
The one thing I couldn’t take was the small of the food. During my trip to India I had gotten really bad food poisoning.
It was my dumb ass fault for eating anything our hosts put in front of me and forgetting they probably prepared food with the local water.
Needless to say, I got so sick, I thought I was going to die in India.
Even to this day I can’t stand the smell of curry.
As we walked around, I saw this banner that said, Happy Diwali. Oh, these folks are celebrating something.
So I asks this lady running a booth want Dawali meant.
She said, Dawali was an ancient festival commentating a when Lord Rama defeated some ancient evil that had killed thousands of people.
But that the festival had changed over time, but this was how Hindu’s celebrated it.
“Like Christmas,” I said, in how capitalism had co-opted Christmas.
As we walked away, I had the thought, so this like Easter, in that light has prevailed over darkness.
I needed to break it down to my Western sensibilities, to make sense of it all.
Now earlier in tnt day, I had taken my mom to confession and we did an hour of Adoration.
It was pretty cool to Catholic stuff with mom.
And if got me thinking about New Years resolutions.
Maybe I can take this opportunity to make some Dawali Resolutions. Don’t know if that’s part of the holiday, but hell I’m Christian and American so co-opting other cultures runs in my blood.
I loved that I took a ton of pics and some of them aren’t bad.
Maybe I need to reinstate my twenty-seven pictures a day challenge.
I’d love to Vlog, so maybe I need to whip one up sooner rather than later.
Most importantly, I’d like to get back into a life of prayer.
I don’t pray as much as should.
It’s one of those things I should do, but rarely do.
I do have prayer goals if you will, but like most things I do, it falls to the wayside pretty quickly.
So maybe Dawali can be a fresh start for me, sort of accidental New Year.
A chance to let the light in.
Happy Dawali Day!
