Talk About A Sign

Andrew Medina January 4, 2021

While cleaning and purging my office today, I found a cross in my room. I’m Catholic, so this shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but I didn’t put it there. I found the cross on the top shelf on top of a stack of books.

Lucy worked from home today, so I asked her. She had put it there. I asked her where it came from.

Lucy is LDS, and Latter-Day Saints aren’t big on crosses or the crucifix. Latter-day Saints tend to focus less on the cross and more on the resurrected Jesus. The two crucifixes I have hanging in my office. One belonged to my Tio Pete, and the other was a gift from my Tia Laura.

Lucy told me she had found the cross hanging on one of the brick columns on our porch. “I thought you had put it there.”

I’d never seen the cross before.

I know how Lucy feels about religious iconography, and respecting her wishes would’ve at least asked or told her I was doing it.

And this cross isn’t something I would’ve picked, as Lucy is particular about crosses, I’m particular of Jesus being on the cross. Again, I’m Catholic.

This cross is mostly turquoise, and I’m not a big turquoise guy. It has a boxy copper border and a heart with flames coming out of it in its center. It is pretty, but not a cross I’d pick.

That someone thought enough of me (us) to buy a pretty cross, find a screw on our column, and hang it for us to see and find in trying to get to the bottom of this mystery. I checked the screw looking for clues.

For a second, I thought, maybe our Mystery Cross Hanger drilled into our house to hang the cross, but it appeared the screw had been there for a while.

Maybe our Mystery Cross Hanger did screw it in. They stopped by the house when we weren’t home, drilled into our home, and hung the cross. I’d like to think I’d hear the drilling.

I did ask Lucy when she found it. She said it was a few weeks ago, thinking it was mine, she put it in my room.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She thought I knew and was just avoiding the subject.

“I don’t have a clue as to who put it there. It sure wasn’t me.”

We asked Marcos, and he was as befuddled as well. He threw out a few guesses, but those guesses didn’t make sense.

I don’t tend to believe in signs. Especially as obvious as a cross. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in the significance of it, but even this is a little over the top.

Still, I can’t help but wonder if this is someone or something is telling me something. Maybe this is just a small reminder that I need to get back on track with my relationship with the Almighty and His Son.

In light of recent events, I may need to open my heart and ears and listen for my Shepard’s call.

So to that Mysterious Cross Hanger, whoever or whatever you are, that put the cross on our house, thanks for the reminder.
